Everyone has a TO READ pile of books, magazines and newspapers. Trouble is, those alternative reading materials are sparse compared to a novel, and so many, many issues must be added to a collection before it triggers a reasonable amount of panic. Play scripts. Thin. Demanding. Such an enormous stack to be conquered. I have children's scripts, edgy scripts, standards, new, one acts, full length, readers' theatre, imagination theatre, experimental stuff...stuff that intrigues, and stuff that stinks. Time to dig in.
Play #1...Anabel gives her heart to a man she meets on the subway - the cover photo is not a metaphor - she literally gives her heart to him and he disappears with it. George is on the run but keeps getting distracted by romantic comedies. He mother Mona resorts to speed dating and taking in any stranger who appears on her doorstep. George was conceived by two broken-hearted people and so George is pre-disposed to having his heart ripped inyo shreds. Determined to prevent that, Mona relentlessly works to find him a new heart. Then Anabel enters the picture, and both she and George face the challenges of navigating hearts with tumbling, twisting, and sparkling emotions.
Play #2...Hate Mail is an epistolary play something like Love Letters, with two actors reading letters and other correspondence - but its wilder and funnier. Dahlia and Preston's lives collide when Preston sends a complaint letter that gets Dahlia fired from her Job, and then there's no turning back. It's snarky, witty, sad, and lovely, It's the age old story of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy accidently find girl again and....
Play reading take a totally engaged mind's eye. When I read a show and begin to see the characters moving about, or imagine how to place things on the stage, I know it's the right play for me to take on. This one I will hang on to for a while, and when the right people are available, we will bring it to life together.
Thanks for stopping by..
