Hemingway

Here's a picture that has been hanging on my office wall since we moved to our current location over twenty years ago. Ernest Hemingway has always fascinated me.  His simple style seemed counterintuitive to other fiction styles. Short sentences. Almost all short sentence, not balanced with compound-complex structures to create balance. Yet there is musicality in his writing. Very few adjectives or ornamentation like similes, metaphors and the much overused alliteration.  Yet there is color in his writing.

It wasn't only his writing that intrigued me.  Risktaker, traveler, hard living.  But I felt there was something secretive and wounded behind the adventurous spirit.  So much is being filled in for me in the series running right now on PBS.

Its a three-parter so get the popcorn going, and in honor of the man himself, an adult beverage or two would be in order.

A few years back, I decided to dedicate a year of reading to Hemingway, starting with the Nick Adams stories.  On the sidebar you'll find an early post on my progress.  That year of reading Hemingway did not go well.  Watching the PBS program has me fired up again.  Maybe I'll try one or two again this year.

Which of his books have you read? Where should I begin?

Thanks for stopping by.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay happy.
